Finance Program in Top 10
The University of Houston Bauer College of Business’s Department of Finance is among the top 10 most productive programs in the United States, according to Academic Analytics’ Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (FSPI), a new quantitative method for ranking doctoral programs at research universities.
“This is great news — but not surprising. In just five years, our faculty size has more than doubled,” says Praveen Kumar, professor of finance and department chair at Bauer College. “We’ve recruited faculty who are among the most productive and talented researchers in the field. Additionally, the work of veteran professors is being complemented by newcomers.”
The FSPI measures the scholarly productivity of faculty based on publications, citations and financial and honorary awards. Entire programs, not individual faculty, are rated and are aggregated to produce rankings of whole universities.
UH was one of only two Texas institutions on the top 10 list in finance research productivity. The Department of Finance ranked eighth. Bauer College received top scores in two categories — journal publications per faculty member and citations per faculty member. Law Center Moves Up in Rankings
The UH Law Center has moved up 10 places — tying with five other schools at 60 — in the latest rankings of top graduate schools compiled annually by U.S. News & World Report. The Health Law & Policy Institute and the Institute for Intellectual Property & Information Law again are among the best in the nation, both ranked in the top 10. The Law Center was named as one of the top 50 diverse institutions in the magazine’s Law School Diversity Index.
“Our substantial improvement in the rankings shows we are on the right track to reconciling perception and reality — and I firmly believe the reality is that we are a great law school, says Ray Nimmer, interim dean. “But this is an underestimate of our true quality. Our goal is and always has been not to simply improve rankings, but to continue to build on our existing quality and to let the world know about it.”

UH American Humanics Program Nationally Recognized
The Graduate College of Social Work’s David M. Underwood chapter of the American Humanics program received the coveted Program Excellence Award from the American Humanics Management Institute.
The award recognizes the campus program that has achieved excellence in programming, institutional and community support, effective public relations and fundraising, quality internships and graduate placement in nonprofit organizations or in higher education. The University of Houston program has secured the Excellence in Fundraising Award (1999, 2005), the Public Relations Award (2006), and numerous internships (2004).
With only 74 American Humanics programs nationwide, the program gives UH undergraduate students the opportunity to earn a nationally recognized certificate in nonprofit management. The curriculum includes courses in human development, public relations, and fiscal and fund development. Students also participate in a supervised internship at a Houston-area nonprofit agency.
