Coogs Come up Dry in the Desert
Last season’s 69-65 upset of #15 Arizona recalled the success for which the Houston Cougar basketball program was once famous. On Sunday night, the team couldn’t repeat history.
In front of a national television audience and a packed McKale Memorial Center, the #10 Arizona Wildcats (8-1) avenged last season’s loss with an 87-62 victory.
Though they entered the game ranked second in the nation in scoring, the Cougars (4-3) couldn’t find their aim, shooting 31% from the floor. Still, Houston was within seven points at halftime. But an early second half Arizona run put the game out of reach.
In his much-anticipated debut, University of Texas transfer Dion Dowell didn’t disappoint. The Texas City native finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Dowell missed the first six games because of NCAA transfer rules.
The Cougars now head to Hawai’i on December 21 to play Charlotte in the first round of the Rainbow Classic.
In Fine Form
Anastasia Pozdniakova springs above the competition. In her ’05-’06 freshman season, the Elektrostal, Russia native took the C-USA diving scene by storm, finishing second in all three diving events at the conference championship meet and earning Freshman Diver of the Year honors.
Her sophomore season has been even more successful.
Of the seven C-USA ‘Diver of the Week’ awards given out this season, Pozdniakova has won four. Most recently, she was UH’s leading performer at the Texas Invitational in Austin, winning both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events. She scored 383.10 in the 3-meter finals to win by nearly 27 points, and scored 316.70 in the 1-meter finals to win by nearly 40 points.
Coming off its sixth straight Top 25 finish, the swimming and diving program faces one of the toughest schedules in the nation during the ’06-’07 season. The Cougars return to action on December 30th for the Hawai’i Relay Meet in Honolulu. The next home competition is January 21st when they host North Texas, New Mexico State, and Florida International. All regular season home meets are held at the UH Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium and are free to the public. For the team's schedule, visit the Women's Swimming and Diving website.
