UH Looks to “Pack The House” for Basketball Game Feb. 17
The UH men’s basketball team invites UH alumni and fans to help “Pack The House” on February 17, when the Cougars play a key Conference USA game against the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 5:00 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars ended the month of January as one of the hottest two teams in C-USA with five straight wins. Houston also enjoyed its best month of January under head coach Tom Penders. Now, Houston enters college basketball’s “separation month” looking to play their way into a postseason tournament for the third straight year, the first UH team to accomplish that feat since 1993.
Fans can purchase remaining reserve and general admission tickets for $5 by calling 713-GO-COOGS (462-6647) or online.
Signing Day: Championship Brings Good Recruits
As defending Conference USA champions, UH took a big step towards a repeat performance, receiving letters of intent from 23 student-athletes on Feb. 7. The Cougars also inked three student-athletes to Statements of Financial Aid.
Among the new class are 20 from the state of Texas, including 11 from the Greater Houston area. UH head coach Art Briles, named 2006 Conference USA Coach of the Year, likes what he sees in this class.
“We’re still carrying momentum from last season’s championship run,” said Briles, who enters his fifth season at the helm of the UH program this fall. “We are one of only 11 teams that won a Division I (conference) championship, and (this title) allows us to create excitement and interest in the University of Houston football program. This is going to be reflected in our recruiting class. We know that we have some quality players that are quality people that are going to be great ambassadors for the University of Houston in future years.”
The class is headlined by junior-college transfer Rodney Brisbon, who was a 2006 NJCAA First Team All-America at Northwest Mississippi Junior College. Check out the impressive credentials of each new player on the UH Athletics website.
The Cougars begin their drive for back-to-back Conference USA titles on March 1, with the start of spring practice. The annual Red-White Game is slated for April 5 at John O’Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
