Last year, with little regard for his own
safety and with one click of his camera, Adrees Latif ('00), a UH
alumnus and Reuters photojournalist captured a moment in time— the
fatal shooting of Japanese videographer Kenji Nagai amid the violent
protests in Myanmar against the Burmese government. Earlier this
month, Latif’s
photograph received the highest national honor in print journalism—a
Pulitzer Prize. more

| UNIVERSITY
NAMES NEW HEAD OF ADMINISTRATION/FINANCE
Veteran higher education administrator Carl Carlucci
has been named vice chancellor and vice president for administration and finance
at the University of Houston and the UH System. Expected to take office in May,
Carlucci will serve as the university’s chief financial officer and
oversee UH Plant Operations, Human Resources and the Department of Public Safety.

UH CHEMIST ONE OF AMERICA’S RISING
STARS IN SCIENCE
Earlier this month, the Arnold and Mabel
Beckman Foundation selected UH chemist Vassiliy Lubchenko as one
of only 16 researchers in the nation to receive the Beckman Young
Investigator Award. The coveted award recognizes Lubchenko as one
of America’s most promising young scientists for research
that ultimately could lead to breakthroughs in solar cells and
memory devices such as flash drives. more
AFRICAN
AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD
The National Council for Black Studies recently honored the African
American Studies (AAS) Program at the University of Houston with
its Sankore Award. The award is given annually and recognizes the
outstanding African American Studies program of the year and its
contributions to the field of Africana Studies. more

COUGAR CROWNED MISS USA 2008
Former
Cougar Crystle Stewart was crowned Miss USA 2008 on April 11, in Las
Vegas, edging out first runners-up Leah Laviano of Mississippi and
Tiffany Andrade of New Jersey. Her national title came less than a
year after winning Miss Texas USA 2008. more
THREE PROMINENT ALUMNI NAMED TO HAO BOARD
The Houston Alumni Organization is
proud to announce the appointment of three prominent alumni to
the HAO Board of Directors: Cathy Coers Frank (’80), Gerald
McElvy (’75), and Laura Murillo (’89, M.Ed. ’98,
Ed.D. ’03). As members of HAO’s governing body, they
are charged with representing the interests of more than 200,000
UH alumni and ensuring that HAO’s operational procedures
are aimed at accomplishing the organization’s goals to serve
the university and its alumni.

TOUCHTON EARN WEEKLY HONORS
University of Houston junior
shortstop Jessica Valis was recently named the Conference USA
Co-Hitter of the Week for the week of April 21. The award, announced
by the conference office, is the first this season for the Shiner,
Texas, native and the second of her career.
UH baseball’s John Touchton, a sophomore
right-hander, was also honored Monday with the first weekly honor
of his career—Conference USA Pitcher of the Week. more

UH alumnus Pete Gonzalez (’74,
M.B.A. ‘94,
J.D. ‘94) has always been on the fast-track. A certified
public accountant and a certified internal auditor, Gonzalez also
juggles all legal matters as the secretary/treasurer of Dynasol
LLC, a world-wide producer and marketer of synthetic rubber. His
duties include serving as general counsel and chief financial and
administrative officer for the company. more
