UH Golfer Ties For Second at Minority Tourney
Sophomore Steven Frazier finished in a three-way tie for second place at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship with a six-over-par total score of 222. Frazier, who is the first-ever UH golfer to play in the tournament created in 1987, shot a five-over-par score of 77 in the third round at the PGA Golf Club after he fired a two-under-par 70 in the first round and a three-over-par score 75 in the second round.
Track and Field Leads the Way
Recently named South Central Region Female Track Athlete of the Year, UH senior sprinter Ebonie Floyd concluded an impressive showing this past week at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The Houston native earned NCAA All-American honors at the event while racing to a third place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 22.65. Junior Ivan Diggs joined Floyd as an All-American with his eighth place finish in the high jump.
Prior to advancing to the NCAA Championships, Floyd won the 100 and 200 meter NCAA Midwest Regional finals. Her record-setting finish in the 200 meters at 22.32 currently ranks as the second fastest time in the world.
Floyd also set three records during the 2007 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finals. The senior led the Cougars to a third place team finish. The men’s team also earned a third place finish. Floyd rewrote the record books when she won both the 200 meters and 400 meters and ran as a member of the 4x100 relay team — turning in a C-USA record finish of 44.24. Floyd’s 200 meter time of 22.67 erased her record set a last year’s conference championships. In the 400 meters, she turned in the winning time of 51.74.
Also on the C-USA championship relay team were freshmen Hyleta Young, Quin’shundolyn McPherson and sophomore Seun Adigun, who also won the 100 meter hurdles. Floyd turned in four of the Cougars nine individual titles during the championships. Junior Jarrett Flax won the decathlon and freshman Alex Bentley won the pole vault. Junior James Lee won the discus, and senior Tristan Whitley won the high jump.
