to The Jack J. Valenti School of Communication in honor of late
UH alumnus Jack Valenti (’46, Honorary ’02), who served
as adviser to President Lyndon Johnson and head of the Motion Picture

ESTESS TO ASSUME INTERIM PROVOST POSITION
University of Houston President Renu Khator has
appointed Ted Estess, former dean of The Honors College, as interim provost to
replace Donald J. Foss, who is stepping down from his position as senior vice
chancellor /vice president of academic affairs and provost, effective June 16.
Foss will resume teaching and will conduct research in the department of psychology,
where he is a tenured full professor.

GOV. PERRY APPOINTS UH LAW STUDENTS TO
HIGHER ED POSITIONS
University of Houston (UH) student
Tamara Goodwin is among 10 students appointed by Gov. Rick Perry
to serve as student regents to their respective university systems.
Perry also appointed UH student Charles E. “Trey” Lewis
III as the student representative to serve on the Higher Education
Coordinating Board. Both Goodwin and Lewis are Houston residents
and attend the Law Center at the University of Houston. Their terms
expire May 31, 2009.
UH AMONG TOP 20 COLLEGES IN NATION FOR
HISPANICS
The University of Houston is in the top
20 of the nation’s colleges and universities awarding bachelor’s
and doctoral degrees to Hispanic students. That is according
to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine’s most recent edition of the Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics. The
figures come from the U.S. Department of Education’s National
Center for Education Statistics. more

PRESIDENT KHATOR TO VISIT ALUMNI CLUBS
THROUGHOUT TEXAS
This summer, University of Houston
President Renu Khator will speak at alumni area clubs throughout
the state of Texas, beginning with the Fort Bend Alumni Club on
June 19 and followed by dates in San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas/Fort
Worth.

CLAIM C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP; HEADED TO POSTSEASON
Fresh off its first Conference USA Championship title in eight
seasons, the University of Houston baseball team will compete as the
No. 3 seed at the NCAA College Station Regional at Olsen Field, scheduled
to begin this weekend. The Cougars (39-22, 14-10 C-USA) will meet No.
2 seed Dallas Baptist at 12:30 p.m., Friday in the first game of the
Regional. The Cougars join No. 1 seed and host Texas A&M and No.
4 seed Illinois-Chicago at the postseason event.

SELECTED BY ST. LOUIS RAMS
IN SECOND ROUND OF NFL DRAFT
Former University of Houston wide receiver Donnie Avery was recently
selected by the St. Louis Rams in the second round of the National
Football League Draft. He was the 33rd selection overall and the
first wide receiver taken. With Avery's early second-round pick
by the Rams, the selection marks the second straight season a Houston
player was chosen early in the NFL Draft's second round. more
UH FOOTBALL LAUNCHES NEW
2008 SEASON TICKET CAMPAIGN
With new head coach Kevin Sumlin in place, the Cougars are ready
put up big numbers—even when it comes to ticket sales.
The University of Houston Athletics Department has launched a
new season ticket campaign seeking 2,008 new season ticket holders
for the 2008 football season. UH will host six home games at
Robertson Stadium this year, and ticket packages are on sale
now for as low as $95. more
