Houston Alumni Organization Reclaims Past Name, Adopts New Look

Houston Alumni Association LogoEffective January 1, 2009, the Houston Alumni Organization will reclaim a name it used from 1957-64: The University of Houston Alumni Association. A new logo, featuring a rendering of the Ezekiel W. Cullen Building, will accompany the change.

The alumni association has held a number of names in its 68-year history. It was first chartered as the Ex-Students Association in 1940, before calling itself the University of Houston Alumni Association (1957), the University of Houston Alumni Federation (1964), the University of Houston Alumni Organization (1976), and the Houston Alumni Organization (1996).

“Houston is a city, and though we are an integral part of the city, the University of Houston is what we represent and serve. We wanted to change our name to reflect that mission,” said Barry Adams, President & CEO of the alumni association. “Association simply reflects the national practice and connotes something far friendlier than organization.”

As one of the oldest buildings on campus, and certainly the most recognizable thanks to its stately art-deco façade and role in university administration, the Ezekiel W. Cullen Building represents the history and tradition that the alumni association and the University of Houston have built together.
