The
Operation is a Smashing Success
That’s a lot of notebooks,
pencils, and backpacks, folks. Thanks to the remarkable efforts
of University of Houston alumni volunteers—nearly 200 of them
showed up for Sort-and-Box Day—thousands of Houston-area school
kids got a fresh start on the school year through Operation School
Supplies. Co-chaired by Houston Alumni Organization volunteers Katie
Kalenda ('99, MA'03) and Jeff Fuller ('95), the operation, in its
16th year, raised over $210,000 and helped 22,000 students
in more than 200 school districts. The effort earned the Houston
Alumni Organization a 2006 Grand Gold Medal in Alumni Relations
Programs from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
“It was our best year ever,” said Tonja Jones ('00),
who headed the project for HAO.
