Men’s and Women’s Basketball Win Season Openers
Senior
forward Dion
Dowell scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed five rebounds
to lead the University of Houston men’s basketball team to
an 83-54 win over Morehead State in the Cougars’ season opener
on November 9 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Senior guard Robert
McKiver also added 19 points for the UH, who forced 28 turnovers
and registered 12 steals on the defensive end. Dowell and McKiver
also combined to make nine of Houston's 11 three-point field goals.
Freshman Brockeith
Pane came of the bench to score 15 points in his collegiate
debut.
After winning their season opener, the Cougars traveled to San Juan
to participate in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament. In their first
tournament game, Houston was edged by Virginia Commonwealth 73-72.
The Cougars will next play Marist.
The University of Houston women's basketball
team also opened up the 2007-08 campaign with a 76-58 home victory
over Texas Southern University. Houston moved its all-time record
to 25-8 in season openers and earned its eighth-straight win over
TSU.
Senior Tye
Jackson led the Cougars with 18 points. The 2007 Conference
USA Preseason Player of the Year has scored in double-figures in
24-consecutive games. Ryan
Meyers, who missed most of last season due to injury, also poured
in 14 points and seven rebounds to help the Cougars earn the hard
fought win.
Following their win against TSU, the Cougars
dropped their first two road games of the year to Cal State Bakersfield
and Cal Poly. Houston returns home on Nov. 19 to face Middle Tennessee.

Volleyball Claims Regular Season Finale
In their second straight match, the University
of Houston volleyball team played five games before defeating the
Tulsa Golden Hurricane at the Athletics Alumni Center. Houston defeated
Tulsa with scores of 30-24, 23-30, 26-30, 30-25 and 15-9.
Houston
(13-14, 8-8 C-USA) was led by junior Justine
Farmer's 28 kills and 23 digs. Ashley
Calhoun also set a career high with 17 kills against the Golden
Hurricane. Her previous best of 16 was set last season against Tennessee
State.
Also setting a career best was freshman Amanda
Carson who had 35 digs in the contest.
The Cougars move to 3-3 in the all-time
series with the Golden Hurricane with today's win. Houston will
next compete in the Conference USA Volleyball Championship Tournament
which on Nov. 15 in Huntington, West Virginia.
