Regents Confirm Khator as Next Chancellor, President

Dr. Renu KhatorThe University of Houston System Board of Regents has unanimously appointed Dr. Renu Khator, provost and senior vice president at the University of South Florida (USF), as UH System chancellor and UH president.

Khator becomes the third person to hold the dual title when she begins her tenure in January. She follows Arthur Smith, who retired in 2003, and Jay Gogue, who became president of Auburn University, his alma mater, this summer. The announcement was made during a special Nov. 5 meeting of UH System Board of Regents, which was followed by Khator’s confirmation and reception at the Hilton University of Houston Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

“We have found an incredible person to lead this university and this system into the 21st century,” said Welcome Wilson, UH System Board of Regents chairman. “Under her leadership, we anticipate that our university and our system will assume their rightful place among the truly prominent institutions of higher education in this state and nation.

”After the confirmation, Khator addressed a crowd of approximately 200 UH System faculty, staff administrators and students. She discussed building the UH System and its four universities into a model metropolitan university system of the 21st century that provides access and excellence with equal ease with the help of faculty, staff, students, donors, legislators, alumni and friends of the university.

“Together we can create a premier learning experience for our students and ensure they have the financial resources to stay in college, graduate and join the workforce equipped to compete in the global marketplace,” Khator said. “We are poised for greatness, and the time has come for us to dream big and earn our place on the national stage.
