Khator Lays Out Plans For Future of UH

The last time the University of Houston saw an increase in enrollment was the fall of 2003. After that it saw a decline. Then it stayed stagnant.

Until now.

For the fall 2008 semester, all four universities in the University of Houston System saw an increased enrollment, adding more than 2,500 students compared to the previous fall semester. And three of the institutions set individual attendance records.

“I want to credit the university as a whole for really being determined to get an enrollment increase, from the admissions department to financial aid department to the colleges,” said Edward Hugetz, associate vice chancellor for Planning and University Outreach. He also says the improved reputation of the university comes from aggressive marketing campaigns and strategies implemented by several levels of the university.

And it seems that whatever the university is doing, it’s working.

The University of Houston main campus passed the 36,000-student level with a 4 percent increase in attendance.

For the first time, the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) enrolled more than 12,000 students while the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) exceeded the 3,000-student mark, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) saw its enrollment rise by 1.5 percent this semester.

Total enrollment for the UH System is 59,222, also an attendance record.

“Clearly, the UH System is playing an increasingly important role as an academic resource for the Upper Gulf Coast area and the state of Texas,” said UH President and Chancellor Renu Khator. “It’s gratifying that so many people are making a commitment to higher education, and we’re pleased to be able to help them achieve that goal.”
