Cougar First Impressions
Back to school
The University of Houston recently kicked off its 2007-2008 academic year by welcoming nearly 35,000 new and returning students to the UH campus. In addition to students scrambling for parking and managing any last-minute schedule changes, the first two days of the new fall semester proved to be exceptionally busy and exciting as over 450 campus-wide volunteers helped thousands of students get acclimated to life as a Cougar.  more

WELCOME WILSON NAMED NEW CHAIR OF UH SYSTEM BOARD
OF REGENTSWelcome Wilson, Chair UHS Board of Regents
Welcome W. Wilson Sr. (’49), noted real estate developer, community leader and University of Houston alumnus, has been elected chair of the UH System Board of Regents for the fiscal year 2008, which began Sept. 1. He replaces Leroy Hermes (’66), who served two terms as chair. The board also elected Calvin W. Stephens (’72) to serve as vice chair and Jim P. Wise (’66) as secretary. more

UH APPOINTS ENGINEERING DEAN
Joseph W. TedescoJoseph W. Tedesco has been named dean of the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston. Currently a professor and chair of the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida, Tedesco’s new appointment will become effective Jan. 1, 2008.  more

NEW PARKING GARAGE APPROVED FOR UH
As the University of Houston continues to grow, parking remains a concern for members of the campus community. Soon, parking worries will be eased as the UH System Board of Regents recently approved a proposal to construct a $9 million garage that will contain between 900-1,000 new parking spaces.  more

The Student Alumni Connection (SAC), a subgroup of the Houston Alumni Organization, was created several years ago to groom students to become alumni. The organization is one of the largest and most spirited on campus, featuring approximately 2,000 members.  more

Anthony AldridgeALRIDGE NAMED TO DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST
University of Houston senior running back Anthony Alridge was recently named to another prestigious watch list, this time being selected a Doak Walker Award candidate. Alridge, who is also on the Walter Camp Award watch list, scored receiving and rushing touchdowns for the second straight game last Saturday to lead UH to an impressive 34-10 win over Conference USA rival Tulane.  more

UH MEN’S HOOPS SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED The University of Houston announced its 2007-08 men's basketball schedule that includes non-conference home games against perennial powerhouses Kentucky and Arizona, a trip to the Puerto Rico Tip Off tournament and 16 Conference USA games featuring home and home match-ups against Memphis, UTEP, Rice, UCF and SMU.  more

Yamile Cendales Jackson When Yamile Cendales Jackson (‘91, M.S. ‘94, Ph.D. ‘2000) gave birth to her son Zachary, he was 12 weeks premature and weighed only one pound, 15 ounces. Now Zachary is a thriving six year old, and Jackson has used her industrial engineering experience to develop a hand mimetic device, the Zaky, which is named after her son, to help premature babies and their mothers feel protected and closer to each other.  more
