District founds the Houston Junior College, a forerunner
to the University of Houston.
- Houston Junior College student
newspaper, The

chooses the cougar as the school mascot.

- Houston Junior College becomes University of Houston,
a four-year institution.
- UH yearbook, The
Houstonian, makes its campus debut.
- Ice Hockey was the first sports tournament won

- Acquisition of 110 acres —

donate $335,000 for UH’s first building —

- UH’s radio station, KUHF-FM,
goes on the air.

- UH’s KUHT-TV, the first
licensed educational television station in the nation,
begins broadcasting on Channel 8.

- UH enrolls first African American
student.
- UH becomes a state university
(Voted on by the 57th Texas Legislature. The bill
was officially signed in 1963.).

- UH Athletics Department is integrated
by students Elvin Hayes, Don Chaney and Warren McVey.

- Touted as the "Game of the
Century", Houston upset No. 1-ranked UCLA in
the Astrodome in this first nationally televised game
before millions and a record crowd of 52,639 fans
— the largest audience ever to attend a college
basketball game.

- Houston Cougars join the Southwest

- Appointment of Margueritte Ross
Barnett as president, the university’s first
African American and first woman president and the
nation’s first to lead a major public research
university.

- First launch of UH's Space Vacuum
Epitaxy Center Wake Shield Facility aboard the Space
Shuttle Discovery, Flight STS-60.

- UH’s Carl Lewis captures
his ninth gold medal in the Atlanta Olympic games.
- UH System Board of Regents
merges the UH System chancellor and UH president
positions.

- Tropical Storm Allison devastates
Houston and ravishes the UH campus.
- UH had more students enrolled
in distance education classes than any Texas university.
- O.D. Brown, UH’s first

- Arthur K. Smith becomes the
first person to hold the dual position of UH System
chancellor and UH president.
- UH celebrates its 75th anniversary.

- University of Houston awards
its 200,000th degree.

- UH football wins bid to the
Hawaii Bowl.
- UH gets $5 million renovations
— giving campus classrooms a fresh and exciting
look.
- Two bronze cougar sculptures
grace the front of the E. Cullen building across
from the Cullen Family Plaza Fountain.

- The M.D. Anderson Library Expansion
and Renovation campaign acquires 4,200 benefactors,
of whom 22 percent were first-time donors.
- UH’s Campus Recreation
and Wellness Center receives the National Intramural
Sports Associations Outstanding Sports Facility
Award (first of many).

- The University of Houston has
international partnerships with 71 countries, covering
six continents.

| 2006 |
- UH research exceeds $78 million.
- UH received a grant from the
National Institute of Health to create the first
generation of nanobiologists.
- There are 3,500+ UH alumni
who own companies or who are president of businesses
and corporations.
- UH has granted a total of
232,422 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral
and professional degrees since 1927.
- UH extends a helping hand
to Hurricane Katrina evacuees through various efforts
across campus including admitting about 1,600 students,
more than any other institute outside the affected
area.
- UH commissions the renowned
urban planning group, Cooper, Robertson and Partners
to develop a broad master
plan to serve as a blueprint for growth for
the next 20 years.
