He’s the latest Cougar to return from space. NASA Mission
Specialist John “Danny” Olivas (M.S. ’93) is one of ten current
and former astronauts who are alumni. As a STS-117 Atlantis
crew member, Olivas traveled some 5.8 million miles in fourteen
days this past June to add more power capability to the
International Space Station. The mission marked NASA’s 118th
shuttle mission. “My UH education made me who I am today.
Both my wife (Marie, M.S. ’93) and I feel an affinity to UH,
and we’re glad for our experiences,” Olivas says. “I’m just
an average guy who did the best I could.”
