Building Our Future

When President Renu Khator took office, she launched the ambitious “Building Our Future: The First 100 Days” campaign—asking the campus community and the public to share their thoughts about UH’s future.

The result was an avalanche of more than 12,000 suggestions. Some were concise: “Get a clock tower!” Some, on the other hand,
were nearly the length of a book. The common thread: a genuine desire to help make UH a better university.

The suggestions have been analyzed (see The Results Are In), and President Khator is relying on them to help formulate plans to make UH a premier research institution. Here are excerpts that reflect the remarkable range of the “100 Days” reactions.

  What You Said...

I think that an institution should be aware of its own strengths and unique characteristics and leverage those to be the best that it can be.
Student

. . . Research that makes a difference, that helps improve people’s daily lives. . . . In terms of teaching, a premier research institution needs to be able to attract the best students and, more important, keep them and see them graduate—so they can make a contribution to the world. —Faculty/Staff

Instead of just looking at this from the city viewpoint, UH needs to expand within the state, either with online offerings or with satellite campuses. Create the need and go where there is need.  —Austinite

UH can not only become the center of research, learning, and growth, it also can become the vehicle to transform our community into a city of innovative thinkers, in terms of new technology and
best-in-class business practices. —Houstonian

100-days Survey

Energy, space, and healthcare are Houston’s strengths and should be ours. Houston also is known for transportation and an entrepreneurial environment that created great leaders. We need to embrace what made Houston great to become Houston’s university. —Faculty/Staff

We need to build MORE, MORE, MORE dorms! I think this will really be the main catalyst needed for UH to move forward.
The sooner this is done, the better the university will be. It will create enthusiasm and campus pride.    —Alumnus

Large endowment, exceptional student body, top research faculty, massive increase in support from the state of Texas.   —Student

UH has many world-class strengths. It is disheartening to continually hear/read that ‘UH is BECOMING,’ or ‘UH ASPIRES
TO BE’ when, in many areas, it already IS.  —Faculty/Staff

Have the local stores sell UH apparel. How can we show our pride when we have such a difficult time finding anything that says UH? We feel that the community is not made fully aware that this university can offer so much.  —Parent

There is no easy fix. The president should make HARD CHOICES and EXECUTE THEM. Many people will be unhappy, but there is no way around it. —Faculty/Staff

Besides the obvious high standards for academics, it is imperative that the institution have a unified and recognizable image, ranging from its architecture to its advertising, and is constantly on the national stage through its athletics program.  —Alumnus
