UH's longest-serving
tenured professor, Mamie Moy—celebrating fifty-five
years—has dedicated her career to making chemistry
accessible to all. A first-generation college graduate,
she believes that everyone can learn if given the opportunity.
Moy’s undeniable enthusiasm
for chemistry, coupled with a sincere enjoyment of teaching,
brings fun to the learning process.
“The discipline of chemistry requires continuous
assessment of trends and directions to ensure quality and
to maintain academic standards,” Moy says. “And
as we now gear up for UH to achieve top-tier status, I
am reminded of the growth I’ve witnessed throughout
my years at this institution and how long we have been
positioning the university in terms of academic excellence.”
Moy doesn’t see retirement
in the near future, citing the need for community outreach.
She passionately has filled that niche for half a century
by actively working with schools to develop hands-on
science workshops.
Honored at the local, state, and
national levels for her love of teaching and her advocacy
for young women, Moy recently was nominated as a “Texas Woman of Distinction” by
the American Association of University Women’s West
Harris County Branch.
