Football
For
the third consecutive year and the fourth time in the past
five seasons, the Cougar football team went “bowling”—this
time as participants in the 2007 Texas Bowl. The high-flying
team, which finished 8–5 (6–2 Conference USA),
put up big numbers on the way to a spirited matchup with
the TC U Horned Frogs. Though coming up a touchdown short
in a hard-fought 20–13 contest before 62,000 fans
at Reliant Stadium, UH laid the groundwork for a 2008 season
in which the “REDvolution” will be led by new
head coach Kevin Sumlin. “I hope the Cougar faithful,
as well as the Houston community, are as excited about
the upcoming season as I am,” Sumlin says.
Baseball
Not to be outdone, the Cougar
team traveled to New Orleans to compete in the Conference
USA Baseball Championship and
brought home the title for the first time since 2000.
The team’s postseason
run ended in the championship game of the NCAA College
Station Regional, where the Cougars took part in their
seventh NCAA Regional appearance in ten years.
Softball
For
the first time in the program’s history, the
Cougar softball team hosted an NCAA Super Regional and
came within one game of the Women’s College World
Series.

Swimming/Diving
Cougars
found success in the water as well as on land. Divers Courtney
Forcucci, Ginni van Katwijk, and Lacey Truelove capped
their 2007–08
seasons in impressive fashion by earning All-America honors
at the NCAA Championship. Van Katwijk also was named C-USA
Diver of the Year, while Truelove was recognized as the
league’s Freshman Diver of the Year. This marked
the seventh straight season a Cougar was named the C-USA
Diver of the Year, and it was the fifth time in the last
seven years a Cougar was honored as the C-USA Freshman
Diver of the Year.

Basketball
The
tradition-rich Cougar basketball team compiled a 24–10 record, advancing to the semifinals
of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational. The twenty-four
victories represented the most wins for the program since
the 1991–92 season.
Facilities
Adding to the
excitement of Cougar Athletics are planned improvements
to facilities including a $38 million end zone project
at Robertson Stadium. These efforts, along with continued
fan support, will help UH raise the Cougar flag to higher
heights and bring back the “Pride
of the Cougars,” according to Dave Maggard, director
of athletics. “It is time for the Cougars to ‘Restore
the Roar,’” he says. |
