There are many ways to say "welcome." And the University of Houston has created the place to do just that.
The need for a Welcome Center was part of the university's master plan more than thirty years ago when the campus was much smaller. Thousands of students later--on a campus that is still growing--a center that serves as a greeting place for the UH community is now a reality.
Located at Entrance 1-- Calhoun and University Drive--across from the Hilton University of Houston Hotel, the Welcome Center serves as the university's point of entry. Prospective and current students can easily access frequently visited administrative offices. The $25.8 million center, which opened in late September, combines a four-story, 1,500-car parking garage with the university's Enrollment Services and a visitor's center.
"Students face a variety of decisions. It's important to take out some of the guesswork on where to go for vital enrollment information," says Don Foss, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.
Future and current Cougars can take care of all their affairs under one roof--from financial aid and scholarships to freshman/transfer admissions and financial services to registration and academic advising referral. Also, the center is a great place for alumni and university visitors needing assistance--from general program and location information to campus tours.
"Visitors and students can learn where they need to go, how to get there, and perhaps best of all, have a place to park," says Dave Irvin, associate vice president of plant operations.
Visitors are invited to learn more about the university in the adjoining visitor's center, where they can speak with UH representatives or access information at computer kiosks.
Plasma screens are located throughout to provide up-to-date information about university services and news. Additionally, the center's ground level is dedicated to retail space.
"The Welcome Center is the perfect place to begin a campus visit, and it's ideal for students to start planning their academic future," adds Foss.
