Lance Campbell
Physicians gave up making
house calls years ago, but there’s one doctor (of
pharmacy) who still does.
For Lance Campbell, R.Ph. (Pharm.D. ’01), “thinking
outside of the box” means “working beyond the
counter” by providing a unique business niche to
his clients— in-home consultations.
“It’s part of what it takes to create a successful
independent business, but it also puts the patient more
at ease,” says Campbell, who opened his first Campbell’s
Compounding Shop in 2003 on Kirby Drive near the Texas
Medical Center and a second location in Sugar Land.
Although Campbell originally considered working in pharmaceutical
sales, his career goals changed after he was introduced
to the world of compounding—the ancient practice
of custom-building new drugs or dosages. “Compounding
is very cuttingedge and innovative. As our knowledge about
genetics continues to grow, personalized medicine is the
wave of the future,” he adds. “Pharmacists
have been doing it for thousands of years.” Much
of Campbell’s business demand is in bio-identical
hormone replacement therapy as well as anti-aging products.
“My clients are taking an active role in their health,
and they don’t have to listen to conventional wisdom
that says they just have to deal with the pain and other
negative effects of aging,” Campbell says. His ties
to UH remain strong—from donating to a college scholarship
fund to providing career opportunities for fellow alumni
and current students. In addition to training pharmacy
students on rotation, Campbell counts College of Pharmacy
alumna Lisa Varghese, R.Ph. (Pharm.D. ’06), and pharmacy
technician Elvin Barao, a current UH pharmacy student,
among his staff members. In addition, Campbell recently
joined the College of Pharmacy Dean’s Advisory Council.
“I always intended to go into business for myself.
It’s a really great career and allows me to take
good care of my family,” Campbell says. “And,
I’m able to impact people’s lives every day.”
