Shannon Miller
She made her Olympic debut at the age of fifteen and became
the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history. And in 1996,
she claimed the elusive gold—two to be exact— leading
USA Gymnastics to a first-place team finish as part of
the “Magnificent Seven.”
Meet Shannon Miller (’03).
Since her Olympic debut, Miller collected a total of seven
Olympic, nine world championship, forty-eight national,
and fifty-nine international medals; she’s been inducted
into five Halls of Fame; and is regarded as one of the
nation’s most accomplished athletes.
So what exactly is Miller up to these days?
With her UH degree in marketing and entrepreneurship in
tow, she now travels the globe as a professional speaker
focusing on topics from health and fitness to leadership
and goal setting. This past year proved to be exceptionally
busy for Miller. She graduated from Boston College Law
School; opened a summer gymnastics camp in Houston; and
founded the Shannon Miller Foundation—an organization
dedicated to fighting childhood obesity.
“I learned a lot about myself while at the University
of Houston,” says Miller. “I realized there
was so much beyond the performance aspect of gymnastics
that I was interested in pursuing.”
Miller was appointed as co-chair of the Florida Governor’s
Council on Physical Fitness and serves on the USA Gymnastics
board; the Chicago 2016 Bid Committee; and she also hosts
her weekly television show, Gymnastics
360º with Shannon
Miller, on the Comcast Network.
And if that’s not enough, Miller plans to be right
in the midst of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing with the Olympic
sponsor hospitality—carving out a new career that
promises to be as rewarding as her athletic achievements.
