Board of Regents
Dear University of Houston Alumni:
As you know, Chancellor/President Jay Gogue is leaving UH this month to accept the presidency at his alma mater, Auburn University. The Board of Regents has now formed a Search Advisory Committee to undertake the national search for a new chancellor of the UH System and president of the University of Houston. We hope to complete our search during the fall semester with an ambitious goal of bringing the new chancellor/president on board by January 2008. This is one of the most important roles of the Board of Regents: identifying and recruiting a visionary leader to take the UH System and the University of Houston into their rightful place among the foremost urban university systems and national research universities. The Search Advisory Committee will be invaluable in helping to bring outstanding candidates to the board.
Several alumni have agreed to serve the university on this very important committee. I have agreed to head the Search Advisory Committee and a number of my fellow regents and alumni also have agreed to serve, including Regent Mike Cemo (’68), who will serve as vice chair. Regents Lynden Rose (’83, J.D. ’89) and Jim Wise (’66) also will serve on the committee.
Other committee members will include: Dr. Max Castillo, UH-Downtown president; Dr. Suzanne LaBrecque, UH-Victoria provost and vice president for academic affairs; and Dr. Chloe Diepenbrock, UH-Clear Lake associate professor of human sciences and humanities and UHCL Faculty Senate president, will represent the UH System universities. Michael Rierson, vice chancellor and
vice president for university advancement, will represent the administration and Dr. Ted Estess, dean of the UH Honors College,
will represent the deans. Faculty representation on the advisory committee will include: Dr. Joseph Kotarba, professor of sociology
and UH Faculty Senate president; Dr. Sam Quintero, UH associate professor of optometry; Dr. David Francis, UH professor of psychology; Sandra Guerra Thompson, UH professor of law; and Dr. Ramanan Krishnamoorti, UH professor of chemical engineering. Staff members will be represented by Carol Barr, Staff Council chair and business manager for the UH Department of English.
Samuel Dike, vice president of the UH Student Government Association, will be the student representative on the committee.
Community representation will include: former UH System regents Liz Ghrist (’67), chair of the Houston Alumni Organization
board of directors, and Beth Robertson, president of Cockspur, Inc.; Melvyn Wolff (’53), chair of the board of Star Furniture;
and Dr. H. Dirk Sostman, chief academic officer and chief medical officer of The Methodist Hospital. The Search Advisory
Committee will be assisted by Dona G. Hamilton, vice chancellor and vice president for legal affairs and general counsel;
and Dr. David P. Bell, assistant vice chancellor and assistant vice president for academic and faculty affairs. Peggy Cervenka
and Gerry Mathisen will serve as executive administrator and assistant administrator, respectively.
If you are interested in submitting recommendations for the chancellor/president position to the Search Advisory
Committee, contact search consultant R. William Funk by e-mail at krisha.creal@rwilliamfunk.com.
I know you join me and all the regents in wishing Jay and Susie Gogue the very best in their new position, and I
promise to keep the alumni informed as we move forward with this important search.
Sincerely,

Leroy Hermes (’66)
Chair, UH System Board of Regents
