Houston baseball (24-19, 10-5 C-USA) is in sole possession
of second place in the Conference USA standings after sweeping No. 23 Tulane on the road. The offense has relied on a balanced attack of nine players with more than 20 RBIs. Dustin Kingsbury paces the squad with 36, while Jimmy Cesario headlines the
team with a .381 batting average. Wes Musick and Aaron Brown lead the pitching staff with identical 6-3 records. Both combined for over 50 strikeouts and held opponents to below a .250
batting clip. |

The Cougar softball team (37-15, 18-3 C-USA) clinched the C-USA Championship and is looking to return to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since the 2004 season. Houston’s
11 of 15 losses this season came against top 25 opponents.
Angel Shamblin passed her win and strikeout totals from last season. The Florida native was named C-USA Pitcher of the
Week on four occasions and set an individual game record with
16 strikeouts against Memphis. Jessica Valis fuels the offense
with a .386 batting average on 68 hits, while Elaina Nordstrom paces the squad with seven homers and 28 RBIs. |

The Cougar track and field teams turn their attention to the outdoor season after another successful indoor campaign. The
men won the C-USA indoor title behind a 24-point sweep
in the 60-meter-run. Winning gold was Carey LaCour’s 6.75 second time followed closely by Tremaine Smith (6.77) and Vincent Marshall (6.85). C-USA Freshman of the Year LaMarcus Hunter won the 60-meter hurdles title with a time of 8.12.
The women finished third in defense of their C-USA title.
Ebonie Floyd won the 200 meters and set a C-USA record with a time of 23.41; and finished third in the 60-meters at 7.32. Quin’shundolyn McPherson took home C-USA Freshman
of the Year accolades and finished fifth in the triple jump. |

Houston tennis (13-9) earned head coach John Severance his
50th career victory with a 5-2 comeback win against College
of Charleston. The Cougars lost to Rice in the opening round
of the C-USA Tournament. Leila Salek compiled a dominant
17-5 mark in singles action. |

The defending C-USA football champions returned to the
gridiron with the annual Red and White game in April. The program also hosted a Pro Day to showcase players for the
NFL scouts. QB Kevin Kolb was drafted in the second round
by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Draft. Eight other
Cougars were signed to free agent contracts. NFL teams report
to mini-camp in June. |
Winter Rewind
Men’s Basketball
The men’s hoops team (18-15, 10-6 C-USA) recorded
a third-place finish in Conference USA before falling
71-59 to Memphis in the C-USA Championship game.
Robert McKiver had a breakout first season for the Cougars en route to an All-Conference USA First-Team selection. The Connecticut native averaged 19.2 points per game and hit 38 percent of his shots from the field, including a 37-percent clip from the three-point line. He also eclipsed the 20-point mark in 14 games.
Oliver Lafayette chipped in 14.3 points per game and posted a team-best, 78 steals. He racked up All-Conference USA Second Team and Defensive Team honors.
Women’s Basketball
The Cougar women’s basketball team (9-19, 5-11
C-USA) finished in a ninth place tie before bowing
out to top-seeded Tulane in the quarterfinals of the
C-USA Tournament.
Houston was headlined by All-Conference USA First-Team performer Tye Jackson, who scored 22.5 points per contest. She set a C-USA Tournament record and matched a school single-game record by pouring in 43 points in UH’s 71-58 opening round win over Marshall.
